- Bio: Captain Shawn J Whitney serves as an Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) Assistant Professor of Aerospace studies and an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He teaches over 100 future officers about leadership, followership, communication, and other qualities of leaders. Additionally, he created the first Aerospace Test Foundations course modeled off of the USAF Test Pilot School curriculum and he now also teaches a course of structured innovation techniques. Capt Whitney is currently slated to attend Air Force Institute of Technology to receive his PhD in Electrical Engineering.Capt Whitney conducts research into cooperative wide area search (WAS) algorithms using Digital Engineering (DE) techniques and principles outlined in model-based system engineering (MBSE). Specifically, he studies the effectiveness of decision-based, statistical, and AI/ML algorithms to search, and detect targets over large search areas and incomplete data. Applications include disaster search coordination, search and rescue operations, and military threat determination.
